New COMBAT Funding Bolsters Youth Employment and Domestic Violence Programs

KCUR 89.3 DeLaSalle Director Sean Stalling talks about the Block 37, a youth employment program, during a press conference at DeLaSalle Education Center on Wednesday. Jackson County will award almost $1.5 million to local agencies to address domestic violence and youth employment. The Community Backed Anti-Drug Tax (COMBAT) program will distribute the money to 24 agencies. COMBAT provided two rounds of emergency funding last year, but this is the first time the program has provided mid-year funding, which will help offset budget shortfalls for agencies with critical needs. “They were looking for a client advocate and they didn’t have the money for it,” COMBAT Director Vince Ortega said. “They needed that client badly because of the pandemic and the caseload they had, and that’s where COMBAT comes in.”

Sarah Morris Named New General Manager Of KCUR And Classical KC

KCUR Sarah Morris has been at UMKC since 2004. She takes over as KCUR s and Classical KC s general manager after serving as interim general manager for the last 15 months. Morris said she plans to focus on growing KCUR and diversifying its staff, leadership and audience. Sarah Morris has been named general manager of KCUR 89.3 and 91.9 Classical KC following a national search to replace Nico Leone, who left in December 2019 to become the president and CEO of KERA in Dallas. Morris, 56, had served as interim general manager of KCUR since Leone’s departure and oversaw its operations during an especially challenging time, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced most of KCUR’s personnel to work from home.
