Victim, suspect ID d in Lawrence fatal shooting

Jan 19, 2021 / 03:45 PM EST LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) Police on Sunday identified a man who died Friday and the suspect charged in his shooting. Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were called around 4 p.m. Friday to the 11000 block of High Grass Drive, north of 56th Street and Sunnyside Road, on a report of a person shot. A man, identified Sunday as 70-year-old George Oakley, was found shot there and taken to an area hospital, where he later died, Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said Friday. Antawin Williams, 31, was arrested and faces a preliminary charge of murder. Police initially said Oakley and Williams were related and staying in the house where the shooting happened. On Tuesday, the Lawrence Police Department issued a correction, saying Oakley and Williams are not related as family members although they knew each other.

Updated: 3:40 PM EST January 19, 2021 LAWRENCE, Indiana Lawrence police are investigating after a man died in a Friday afternoon shooting.   It happened around 4 p.m. at a home in the 11000 block of High Grass Drive in Oaklandon.   A police department spokesperson said the incident began as a disturbance among individuals. The man was later identified as 70-year-old George Oakley.  The suspect was located in the area and taken into custody by responding officers just after the shooting happened. Police say both individuals knew of each other and were staying at the residence where the shooting occurred. The shooting was a result of an ongoing argument or dispute between the two individuals involved.
