Sexual harassment is normalised and an open secret across Victoria s courts, with a review calling for legal and cultural changes to help stamp out predatory behaviour.
The review was sparked by a separate inquiry that found former High Court justice Dyson Heydon harassed six associates while he worked there. Mr Heydon has denied the accusations.
Former Victorian human rights commissioner Helen Szoke has made 20 recommendations to better protect lawyers and others working across the state s courts and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Many women and some men told me their stories of the open secret of sexual harassment, she said in her report released on Monday,
Thousands of women are gathering in cities across the country, angry about the allegations of rape, sexual abuse and harassment emerging from our parliaments and schools. They’re also furious with a prime minister who’s said he’s too busy to attend a rally in person to hear these concerns and would prefer a private meeting.
In Sydney, thousands of women gathered in crowds outside the town hall, spilling into the surrounding streets. They were dressed in black, waving placards: “What are you afraid of ScoMo?”, one read. “You will be held accountable,” said another. Another: “We shouldn’t need to do this.”

Apart from all the natural disasters, I think of stories about George Pell, the coverage that led to the Banking Royal Commission, the SAS in Afghanistan and because I am a law nerd, the reporting on former High Court Justice Dyson Heydon.
Many of these stories are the product of investigative journalism. This is not the sort of “journalism” you see in a tabloid rag or a late-night rant on Sky News. It is the type of high-quality journalism that takes time and patience.
