City of Sterling Heights to poll public on pet poultry Advertisement STERLING HEIGHTS The city of Sterling Heights will hold off on a decision on whether to allow residents to own backyard chickens until a flock of survey respondents give their opinions. During the April 6 Sterling Heights City Council meeting, resident Brandy Wright asked for an update on what the city is considering doing about backyard chickens. She added that Councilman Michael Radtke had previously proposed looking into the issue. “A number of communities in our area do allow for backyard poultry, including Ann Arbor, which I know we like to compare ourselves to. So if they can do it, why can’t we?” Wright said. “And you can easily charge for a permit fee so the city will know who begins and can go around and make sure we’re following the rules.” ....

On April 6, Sterling Heights city officials gathered at the Sterling Heights Community Center and rolled out a list of “Break-Free Blast” public events starting in late spring and continuing through the rest of the year. Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor lamented how the Community Center had to close so soon after its Feb. 29, 2020, grand opening and how the last major event the city had prior to shutdowns was the Cultural Exchange. Even the 2020 Sterlingfest Art and Music Fair was canceled. ....
