Big Brothers Big Sisters starts Conservation Buddies program

With help from a $5,000 award from NIPSCO’s Environmental Grant program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana is announcing a new program, Conservation Buddies. Conservation Buddies is inspired by Big Brother Andrew Niedermeyer and his wife, Big Sister Charita Niedermeyer. Both are interested in every aspect of outdoor life and have been honored by the National Wild Turkey Federation for their success in bringing others into their passion of hunting, fishing, shooting, birding, hiking and other outdoor activities. “The numbers of hunters are decreasing, and quickly, and the reality is that sportsmen and sportswomen pay for 80% of the conservation in the country,” Andrew Niedermeyer said. “I’d like to get more kids into hunting and fishing and conservation, and maybe they’ll start caring about conservation. This is also a different way to attract others to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.”

Local courses part of Indiana s top 30

WELLINGTON, Florida — Longtime Indiana golf writer Mike May, a former resident of Seymour, recently completed a publication, “Hoosier State’s Top Golf Destinations,” which highlights Indiana’s top 30 public-access golf courses. Those 30 courses include three in northeast Indiana: Zollner Golf Course on the campus of Trine University in Angola and Noble Hawk and Cobblestone golf courses in Kendallville. The next closest course to make the list is The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. Ley says Indiana provides golfers with everything they want and need in a golfing getaway. The booklet provides a short description of each course. The booklet is posted on GoGolfandTravel.com and IndianaGolf.com. In addition to a description of each course, the booklet contains a number of images from the 30 layouts that are built on a variety of landscapes ranging from the gently rolling plains at the foot of southern Indiana’s Floyd Knobs to the infield of Indianapolis Mot

New home construction rose in 2020, but still behind past years

Last year was a boom year for homebuilding across Indiana, and although Noble County didn’t see a record spike in new home construction, numbers were up compared to 2019. But with new subdivisions under development, 2021 could shape up to be one of the county’s best years for new home construction in decades. Despite the pandemic, Noble County saw more new homes in 2020, with the county seeing 121 homes permitted last year. That’s up from 97 total homes built in 2019, one of the county’s slowest years in recent history. The 2020 numbers fell behind the 141 homes permitted in 2018, but beat the 113 homes started in 2017.
