As the Titans Class of 2021 prepares to turn their tassels, there is much to celebrate.
Graduation, which has origins that date back to the 12th century, is a rite of passage for the hard work students have put in throughout their years of primary, middle and secondary education. It also marks the transition from adolescence into adulthood, where students must decide what comes next.
The 850-plus graduates will attend 196 different colleges and universities to study toward various careers, join the military, attend trade schools, work to support their family or take some time to determine what comes next. Whatever their path may be, we know our students are prepared and have the tools necessary to discover and accomplish their dreams.

In November, the Alexandria City School Board voted to change the name of T.C. Williams High School. After a series of polls among students, staff and the public, Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings, Ed.D made the recommendation to the School Board to rename it Alexandria High School. The Board will vote on April 8 and the new name will be official on July 1.
Cost estimates by ACPS to implement the name change at T.C. Williams total about $325,000. Given the cost, choosing to name the school after the community and returning to the name of the city’s historic high school, until 1935, and not to name it for a person is a wise choice.
Whether it was service throughout her more than 30-year career in the military or through her many community involvements, retired Lt. Col. Terry Owens always has emphasized care for others.
A newly elected member of the Radcliff City Council, Owens has been active in several community organizations since moving to the Fort Knox area in 2007.
Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Owens earned a bachelorâs degree in biology in 1987 and a masterâs degree in elementary education in 1990 from Hampton University. Also in 1987, Owens joined the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic in the 18th Field Hospital in Norfolk, a decision that foreshadowed a long career in military leadership.
With the holiday season upon us, gifts, giving and generosity are on everyone’s mind, even and especially in a year like no other. At the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, we are so incredibly grateful for the generosity of this community in supporting college scholarships for local students with financial need. We know that for our students, whose families struggle to make ends meet, a college scholarship can change a life forever.
Simply put, the need for college scholarships in Alexandria has never been greater in our 34-year history than right now. The global health pandemic and its economic impacts are devastating for local families who may already live near the poverty line.
