Restaurant sued for scanning fingerprints instead of using time cards

Chicago federal court CHICAGO (Legal Newsline) – A Chicago hotel faces litigation because it scans employees hands when they clock in to work. The suit against DHC Food & Beverage Corporation and Davidson Hotel Company is filed under Illinois’ Biometric Privacy Act and complains that the scans create risks for employees. The plaintiff works at Nico Osteria, a restaurant inside the Thompson Chicago Hotel. “Handprints are permanent, unique biometric identifiers that will be associated with the employee forever, whereas other security measures that may be misplaced or stolen can be deactivated,” the suit says. “Keeping employees’ biometric identifiers on file exposes them to serious privacy risks like identity theft and unauthorized tracking.”
