Iwi returns affected by Covid in 2020, new report shows

The TDB Iwi Investment Report found tourism diversification backfired last year.
2020 was a challenging year for iwi, with three – Ngāi Tahu, Tūhoe, and Waikato-Tainui – reporting negative returns on assets, according to the Iwi Investment Report 2020.
The report is compiled annually by boutique Wellington advisory firm TDB, which was founded by former Treasury director and economist Phil Barry in 2002.
With combined assets of about $5.7 billion, the nine iwi covered in this year’s report are Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Pāhauwera, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Raukawa, Tūhoe, and Waikato-Tainui. ....

The pandemic took its toll on nine iwi, depressing returns for those with investments in hard-hit areas such as tourism, adventure activities and hotels.
The TDB Advisory Iwi Investment Report 2020, out today, estimates that
post-settlement iwi have assets of about $9.8 billion, up from last year s $9.2b, but most failed to achieve benchmark annual returns on their investments.
The study analysed nine iwi which now have $5.7b. That nine hold about 60 per cent of assets owned by all the post-settlement iwi.
Three of the largest iwi - Ngāi Tahu, Waikato Tainui and Tūhoe - recorded losses, the study found. ....
