Executive Editor Mike Myer Passes At 69
By Ed Parsons - Editor | Jan 13, 2021
J. Michael Myer, a familiar face throughout West Virginia, and executive editor of the Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, died Wednesday, January 6, at Wheeling Hospital. He was 69.
Mike spent several years in the early part of his career as Editor of the Wetzel Chronicle his hometown paper. He had a love for the weekly papers, and was quick to call with a compliment, or offer help when needed.
Not once was he ever critical, but instead he chose to offer helpful advice.
Myer was currently the president of the trustees of the West Virginia Press Association Foundation, the educational non-profit supported by the state’s newspaper industry.

The Ohio Valley and the state of West Virginia lost a true community leader Wednesday with the unexpected passing of J. Michael Myer, executive editor of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register. He was 69.
Myer’s career spanned from the mid-1970s through 2020. He was inspired to pursue a reporting career following the Watergate hearings, and often would say it only took seeing his first byline in print to become truly hooked on the business.
Myer was a newsman, one who prided himself not only on reporting the news, but also in making sense of it. He was honest and fair, passionate in his work and respectful of and loyal to those he worked with.
Through the Lens (3…2…1…HAPPY NEW YEAR)
By Chuck Clegg - | Dec 30, 2020
The Wetzel County Courthouse
This Thursday at midnight, the count down to a new year will echo around the globe. It is the time when we watch as the New Year moves around the world from time zone to time zone. On television you can watch as the island nations of Samoa, Tonga and Kiribati in the south Pacific are the first to welcome the arrival of 2021. Shortly thereafter, New Zealand and Australia enter the New Year with celebrations of fireworks and parties. I believe this year, these celebrations will bring a new hope for the end of this world wide pandemic.
