Baker, Troxell join Wethersfield School Board

What difference can one vote make?
For Paula Baker and Amber Troxell, it meant the minor difference of a two or four year term on the Wethersfield Board of Education.
Baker was sworn in last week with three incumbents who won new terms unopposed for four seats on the ballot April 6. Baker, along with Troxell, ran as write-in candidates after no one filed to fill the seat vacated by board member Sue Brody who did not seek another term.
After the preliminary counting of the ballots, Baker led Troxell by four votes, 191 to 187, but late ballots had yet to be counted. When the official tally was released by the Henry County Clerk s Office, Troxell had closed the gap to within one vote, but had fallen short by one vote, 192 to 193.

Rapid testing, student vaccinations get local traction

The Wethersfield School District now has a new tool in its toolbox which will help keep students in classrooms and sports now that they are back in school five days a week.
The Wethersfield School Board approved a rapid testing program at its April meeting Thursday night which will allow the school nurse to administer the test to students who exhibit COVID symptoms and know within minutes whether they test positive or negative for the virus.
Kewanee School Dist. 229 also is participating in the rapid test program, part of an Illinois State Board of Education pilot program. The state also announced late last week that it would be opening up vaccinations to 16-year-olds.

Wethersfield School Board candidate Paul Baker edged ahead of fellow write-in candidate Amber Patch-Troxell in late vote counting Wednesday, but it will be another 14 days before the winner is named.
Henry County Clerk Barbara Link reported that after Wednesday s count, Baker held a slim margin of 191-187.
Link said that a new Illinois law requires election officials to wait for 14 days for ballots postmarked by April 6 and sent by mail.
In the Wethersfield race, she said there are still enough outstanding ballots to turn the tide in the race. She said there are about 20 of the mail ballots requested but not yet returned.
