Emails show Minneapolis police chief coordinated with PR pros to fight council, protect budget

Bill Rodriguez was the first speaker at the first public hearing on cutting funding to the Minneapolis Police Department. “We need both: the police and reform,” Rodriguez said at a City Council meeting in November.
Variations on that phrase “we need both”  were repeated throughout the hearing. It is the signature talking point of Operation Safety Now, the pro-police group Rodriguez founded. ....

The crowd roared approval at the idea that their movement would gridlock the city if jurors hearing the case against former police officer Derek Chauvin failed to convict him in Floyd s death.
Tulloch and his friends in Minneapolis have emerged as some of the loudest, strongest voices for police reform in the city and nationally, but their confrontational methods and and reluctance to condemn rioting, looting and arson has put them at odds with more established reform groups. ....

MINNEAPOLIS Just outside the entrance to Smile Orthodontics, in a Minneapolis neighborhood of craft breweries and trendy shops, two soldiers in jungle camouflage and body armor were on watch, assault rifles slung over their backs. Snow flurries blew around them. A few steps away at the Iron Door Pub, three more National Guard soldiers and a Minneapolis police officer stood out front, watc ....
