Breweries banking on Tampa Bay Beer Week for much-needed business
TAMPA, Fla. - Eighty breweries throughout Tampa Bay are participating in Tampa Bay Beer Week, which runs March 6 through 14. Typically the event would draw at least 1,000 people, but, due to the pandemic, it’s being held on a smaller scale.
Breweries will still have things like brewing competitions, tastings, and special beer releases. Now more than ever it s important to visit your local craft brewery, visit your local eatery, spend some money, get the capital flowing, said Ethan Tsai, the general manager of brewing operations at the Cigar City Brewing Company. In the year of COVID, craft beer contracted massively, depending on where you live, contraction was as high as 25 to 30 percent of the breweries, just gone, just vaporized.
Because of that, Tsai started paying more attention to Dae Gee’s beer selections none of which were from Tivoli and suggested the idea of brewing something that was specifically designed to be paired with Korean dishes such as kimchi, Dae Gee s beef short ribs and fried chicken.
Kim was on board, and the result of their collaboration, Oink Ale, is already on tap at all five Dae Gee locations. A canned version will make its debut in February, and will be part of Kim’s shipping business.

“We could have just cloned Hite or Cass or another popular Korean lager, but we decided we didn’t want to do that,” Tsai explains. “But we wanted to make something that was still drinkable and something that was familiar” to Korean diners, he adds, so he suggested that Oink Ale be based on a traditional Korean unfiltered rice wine called Makgeolli. “If you look at Korean food, rice is a staple, so why not put that into beer as a driver for flavor?”
