As the nation reels from the latest spates of mass shootings in South Carolina, Texas and Georgia, Indiana is struggling with a gun violence crisis of its own.
The uptick in gun-related homicides spiked 30% on average in cities across the U.S. last year, but 40% in Indianapolis.
And in South Bend, there were 23 fatal shootings in 2020, compared to 11 in 2019, earning the moniker âShot Bend.â
Firearms inundate neighborhoods where residents are unlikely to carry life insurance and are on their own to navigate an increasingly higher-risk environment. For years, weapons have surged into low-income communities and, not surprisingly, Indiana earned a âD-â on the current Giffords Law Center Gun Law Score Card.
