A licensed therapist is suing Washington state over its ban on sexual orientation counseling for minors, a practice described by critics as âconversion therapy.âÂ
In a lawsuit filed last Thursday in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington at Tacoma, licensed marriage and family therapist Brian Tingley contends that Senate Bill 5722Â constitutes a âdenial of free speech rights that is guaranteed by the First Amendment.Â
The lawsuit calls the measure ârelating to restricting the practice of conversion therapy a violation of the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment due to its vagueness.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) â The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted unanimously Thursday to ban conversion therapy for LGBTQ minors.
The vote made Lexington the third city in Kentucky, along with Louisville and Covington, to ban the controversial practice that aims to change someone s sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a step that will further protect LGBTQ+ youth and makes our city a more safe, equitable, and just place to live, councilwoman Hannah LeGris said in a Facebook post Thursday.
Kentucky lawmakers cosponsored statewide conversion therapy bans earlier this year. While that legislation received a historic discussion in Frankfort last summer during an interim joint committee meeting of the Kentucky General Assembly, it received no consideration during the 2021 legislative session.
As a gay man, it frightens me. As a health care professional, it enrages me. I am a board-certified family nurse practitioner who serves the health care needs of LGBTQ+ patients. My work is dedicated to evidenced-based practice and advocacy for my patients. Fortunately, I never experienced conversion therapy firsthand. However, one of my best friends did take his own life as a result of his experience with conversion therapy when we were 13.
Conversion therapy threatens my community and needs to end. I am calling for a legislative end to the practice in Kentucky.
The practice asserts that same-sex attraction or any form of the trans experience is “curable.” The notion is that the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth are some sort of disorder or disease. Homosexuality was removed in 1973 from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
