Wildsight launches second annual West Kootenay Youth Climate Corps

by Wildsight on Tuesday July 27 2021 Members of the West Kootenay Youth Climate Corps Wildsight is seeking to hire a group of young adults in the West Kootenay area interested in tackling unique local projects that address the global climate crisis and support local community priorities. From September to December 2021, crew members on the Youth Climate Corps (YCC) will earn wages and receive training in leadership, teamwork, and communication, as well as practical skills and certifications for climate-related fields such forestry, food, energy, ecology, and more. No prior experience is required. YCC successfully launched its first crew in Nelson last fall and a second in the Kimberley Cranbrook area earlier this year.

The case for a Youth Climate Corps in Canada

The climate mobilization in Canada, as I’ve written in previous columns, has yet to feel like a grand societal undertaking. Among the bold initiatives that would send such a signal a Youth Climate Corps. As young people come to the end of a school year unlike any before, and those in their teens and early 20s wrestle with the prospects of a dismal job market, post-secondary institutions still reeling with post-pandemic realities and, looming over it all, the escalating climate crisis, now would be a very good time to offer an ambitious new opportunity for those looking for something hopeful and meaningful.
