The ABC Young Performers Awards returns in 2021 with a new format

Entries are now open for the 2021 ABC Young Performers Awards, one of Australia’s most prestigious awards for young classical musicians. The competition re-emerges from hiatus in a new online-only format to accommodate social distancing restrictions. Finals will be live-streamed on ABC Classic in November, 2021. Roland Gridiger OAM, CEO of the Music & Opera Singers Trust (MOST) the body that took over management of the awards in 2016 says COVID-19 precautions have left many young musicians with few opportunities for performance and exposure. “We decided that we should present a digital competition … to try to help those instrumentalists that have been confined to home, or haven’t had jobs, exposure, or haven’t had the chance to really take up their instruments and perform,” said Gridiger.

Topeka Performing Arts Center has opened its application for its Young Artists awards

Applications can be found by visiting topekaperformingarts.org. According to a news release from Shawn Brian, marketing coordinator for TPAC, the Young Artists Awards started in 1995 as a way to recognize the county s high school juniors who were excelling in the fine arts. Today, the program continues to celebrate the students contributions to the enrichment of their schools and community. Any Shawnee County high school junior can be nominated for the awards in the categories of instrumental music, musical theater, vocal music, dramatic theater, dance, visual arts, technical theater, creative writing and community services in the arts. Once the application closes, a panel of judges will review the nominees to choose a winner in each category, Brian said. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place May 19, but that date is subject to change based on COVID-19 restrictions.
