Daily Herald Media Columnist Robert Feder provided the keynote speech on May 7 to the annual Illinois Associated Press Media Editors awards ceremony. In it, he gave a nostalgic tour of his career and a call to defend journalism. This is an edited transcript, along with the recorded video.
Many of the awards were presented at this week s Illinois Press Association virtual convention.
The work includes five first-place awards four from the Illinois Press Association, one from the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors during contests judged by journalists from the North Carolina Press Association. It also includes an award from the nationwide Associated Press Sports Editors contest.
The Journal Star also placed second in the sweepstakes category for medium-sized daily papers, based on the strength of its individual awards. The paper competes against suburban and downstate media outlets including the (Springfield) State Journal Register, Rockford Register-Star, the (Bloomington) Pantagraph and the Northwest Herald of Crystal Lake. The News-Gazette of Champaign won the division s trophy for the seventh consecutive year.
Register-Mail named 2nd best small daily in Illinois
The Register-Mail was named second best small daily newspaper in Illinois in one newspaper contest Friday and in another its Black Voices series was named best writing entry among all the state’s mid-sized newspapers.
The results of two contests were announced Friday. The Register-Mail had already reported its 16 awards in the Illinois Press Association contest when they were announced in April. Stories in the Black Voices of Galesburg series earned five of the 16 awards. Those awards were read aloud during the virtual conference Friday along with the two top awards, General Excellence (best overall newspaper based on two editions) and the sweepstakes award (which is given to the newspaper with the best finish across all categories. The Register-Mail earned second place in both.
