Prop 12 offers no benefit to consumers, animal welfare

Getty Images/iStock Photos PROP 12 HEADACHES: CDFA just released a proposed rule on how to comply with new space requirements for gestating hogs. The industry remains concerned about how the rule would be implemented that creates higher costs for consumers and actually doesn t improve animal welfare. CDFA admits in rule cost benefit analysis that Proposition 12 increases costs to consumers and pork producers. Suggested Event Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021 The North American Meat Institute says the State of California’s Proposition 12 provides no benefit to consumers and increases breeding sow mortality, according to the state’s own proposed rule. The industry group made the remarks in a reply brief in support of its petition to the U.S. Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and in response to the defendants’ previously submitted briefs.

Big Beef Could Leave Food Supply Chain Vulnerable To Hackers

Listen • 1:20 A massive hacking incident against beef processing giant JBS caused an estimated 20% of U.S. beef packing plants to grind to a halt earlier this week. JBS was quick to get things back online, but the attack raises questions about cyber security and market consolidation. Cattle ranchers across the region have expressed concerns about certain companies getting too much power and affecting too much of the market. According to USDA estimates, only four companies control about 80% of the beef processing market. “I think there’s a concern in the cattle industry of putting all your eggs in just too few baskets,” said Eric Belasco, an agricultural economics professor at Montana State University.
