Ramona High grad earns military excellence award at recruit training command

Seaman Recruit Amado Ornelas, a Ramona native, graduated March 25 as the top sailor from Recruit Training Command, earning the Military Excellence Award.
“Ever since I was little, I was fascinated by Naval Special Warfare units,” said Ornelas, 20, who is assigned to the rate of Navy Diver. “I read about Navy divers and thought that diving below the waves sounded like a fulfilling career.”
Ornelas graduated cum laude from Ramona High School in 2019, receiving the school’s weight training student of the year and the Crystal Apple Award.
