Iraqi security forces yesterday arrested the Governor of Babel, Hassan Mandil Al-Sariawi, on corruption charges,
Anadolu news agency reported.
The agency quoted an unnamed police officer as saying that a special security force from the capital, Baghdad, arrested Mandil after an arrest warrant was issued by the Iraqi judiciary against him for corruption.
The officer, who asked not to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, explained that the security forces took the governor to a security centre in Babil before he is due to appear before the judiciary.
The Kurdish security forces Asayish arrested all five activists and journalists in October 2020 and were immediately charged with “being spies” and “destabilizing national security”. In the case documents made available to the lawyer, Sherwan Sherwani was accused of being a spy based on his activism and travel to attend journalism trainings abroad, including as a result of receiving payment of 5,000 USD from the American Bar Association. The lawyer was not able to review the case documents of the others.
KR-I Prime Minister Masrour Barzani had previously claimed the detainees were spies and saboteurs and accused them of working for foreign governments to plot terrorist attacks. Dr. Zebari, KRG’s Coordinator for International Advocacy, denied that the five activists and journalists were sentenced for their journalistic work.

The Iraqi Commission of Integrity (Nazaha) said yesterday as many as 28 arrest warrants have been issued against officers in the Iraqi army on corruption charges and bribery.
The body said in a statement that the Iraqi judiciary in the southern Governorate of Maysan has issued 28 arrest warrants against officers who it believes overlooked the absences of the brigade s members in return for cash.
According to the statement, the commission s investigation office in Maysan governorate has collected all the available evidence, checked it, issued independent documents for each violation and submitted them to the competent court which in turn issued 28 warrants against the defendants based on Article 307 of the Iraqi Penal Code.
