In addition to changing the colored safety flags posted at South Haven beaches this summer, a website will also be updated and text messages sent out when the flags are red, according to a news release from South Haven Area Emergency Services. The upgraded alert system is being implemented because of an increase in water-related emergencies in 2020, the SHAES release said. Three people drowned, and there were 23 rescues of people struggling in Lake Michigan last summer in the South Haven area.

This year – in the wake of an increase in water-related emergencies a year ago – SHAES and the City of South Haven are implementing initiatives to better inform the public before heading to the beach, especially on red flag days, a news release said Tuesday. South Haven Area Emergency Services The city’s IT staff has developed a text messaging system that will send alerts to mobile phones when flags are flying red.

South Haven Area Emergency Services launches cadet program South Haven Area Emergency Services and last updated 2021-02-24 21:24:13-05 SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — South Haven Area Emergency Services is launching a cadet program in the coming months that will introduce participants to the firefighting and emergency medical service professions, according to a news release Wednesday. Cadet prospects will attend training, respond to emergency calls as an observer and help at events and fundraisers. South Haven Area Emergency Services Beginning in September, South Haven Area Emergency Services will sponsor cadets for the state certifications required to become a firefighter. “We are excited about this new opportunity to serve the young people in our community,” SHAES Executive Director Brandon Hinz said. “And who doesn’t want to be a firefighter.really?!”
