A total of 163 students and staff at 34 K-12 school districts were infected by known coronavirus outbreaks last week, according to data released Monday, May 24.
The latest school outbreaks report, published weekly by the Department of Health and Human Services, was an improvement from the prior week when 53 outbreaks resulted in 205 students and staff members being infected. The data includes preschools and daycares in those buildings.

As of Tuesday, Michigan has 7,027 confirmed cases of the UK variant (B.1.1.7) and five probable cases, with 519 confirmed cases reported in the Michigan Department of Corrections. In addition, there are 38 confirmed and two probable cases of the B.1.351 strain first detected in South Africa. Two strains originally detected in California, B.1.427 and B.1.429, account for 64 and 188 cases, respectively, and there have been 97 confirmed cases and one presumed case of the P.1 strain originally detected in Brazil. Michigan has a total of 7,422 variant cases.
The state announced 71 new school-related outbreaks on Monday. The largest with 21 cases is at Imlay City Middle School in Lapeer County. Another 258 ongoing outbreaks were also reported. The 329 total outbreaks includes 10,964 cases.

The Michigan health department reported 2,527 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, bringing the state s total to 851,947 cases since the pandemic began.
Another 126 deaths were announced Tuesday, adding to a death toll of 17,897 confirmed deaths since March 2020. Of the 126 deaths Tuesday, 51 were identified during a vital records review.
In the state’s latest update on vaccines, 49,958 doses were administered in Michigan on Friday, 49,958 on Saturday and 8,970 on Sunday. The seven-day average for doses administered is 54,881, below the state s current target of 100,000 a day. Of the population 16 and older, 39.0% are fully vaccinated, with a goal of 70% vaccinated.

Last week, the state reported 201 infections in new outbreaks at 48 K-12 school districts and three colleges.
The biggest new outbreak involves 21 students and staff at Imlay City Middle School near Lapeer.
K-12 school outbreaks were identified in 28 counties. Below are those outbreaks listed by county.
Allegan: Wayland Union High School, four students.
Benzie: Frankfort Elementary School, five staff and students.
Berrien: Lybrook Elementary in Eau Claire, two students; Watervliet High School, two students; Brandywine Middle/High School in Niles, two students.
