It has been one year since the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, one year since an 8 minute and 46 second video of the encounter sparked international protests and a call, once again, for racial justice.
In Salem, those who have long sought equal treatment for people of color saw a spike in interest in achieving those changes. They participated in and sometimes insisted on conversations and action within city councils, school boards, police departments and the state Legislature.
One year removed from Floyd s death, the Statesman Journal looks back on how the fight for racial equity and justice has developed, and what the road ahead may yet hold.

The Institute of Race Relations CEO Dr Frans Cronje will step down at the end of the year.
Cronje has been with the IRR for 18 years and had initially planned to step down at the end of 2019.
While at the IRR, Cronje established the IRR s Centre For Risk Analysis.
Institute of Race Relations (IRR) CEO Dr Frans Cronje will step down at the end of the year.
He leaves the IRR after 18 years, eight of which were spent as CEO.

Cronje reportedly established the IRR s Centre For Risk Analysis, which specialises in using scenarios to help business and government leaders make decisions about investment and policy in South Africa. He has reportedly advised hundreds of local corporations, foreign investors and policy writers.
