UVA Press Announces New Series The Black Soldier in War and Society
February 2021; Charlottesville, VA: The University of Virginia Press is pleased to announce “The Black Soldier in War and Society: New Narratives and Critical Perspectives,” a new series for innovative scholarship on the Black military experience to highlight the diverse and complex experiences of African-descended people and to explore the implications of their participation in war.
“We are delighted to welcome this important series to UVA Press,” said the Press’s director, Suzanne Morse Moomaw. “The books in it will highlight the enormous contributions of Black soldiers in protecting our freedoms over the centuries but also the racist challenges they faced in the military and in their communities back home.” ....

Austin to host 3 community talks on public safety and people of color

The city of Austin will host three community engagement meetings on its commitment to implement policy and cultural changes to address the disproportionate impact of police interactions that result in violence against people of color and other affected communities.
Meetings will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and Jan. 23 and at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28. The Saturday meeting will be conducted in Spanish with English interpretation, and the following two meetings will be in English with Spanish interpretation available.
These citywide conversations build on the series of council district sessions that began in the fall. Comprehensive community engagement, which allows residents several opportunities to learn more about and share their thoughts and ideas about public safety reform, is a key element of the Reimagining Public Safety Initiative.  ....

National law group honors UCLA law professor, Albuquerque native

Watching her father working at the University of New Mexico, where he was an administrator, got Laura E. Gómez thinking that an academic setting such as that was a perfect fit for her.
Today, Gómez, a scholar in law and sociology, is a tenured professor of law at the University of California Los Angeles, and co-founder and director of UCLA’s Critical Race Studies Program. She also holds appointments in the Sociology Department, and in the Chicana/Chicano Studies and Central American Studies Department.
On Feb. 16, Gómez will be formally honored with the 2021 Outstanding Scholar Award from the American Bar Foundation, which is the research arm of the American Bar Association. ....
