(May 28, 2021) Salisbury Mayor Jake Day, who arrived back in the states late last month after being deployed with the Army National Guard to Africa during 2020, will deliver the keynote speech at the Memorial Day service in Ocean Pines on Monday.
The event takes place at the Worcester County Veterans Memorial on May 31 at 11 a.m.
Day is one of three U.S. mayors to deploy for active military duty while in office.
The others are former North Ogden, Utah Mayor Brent Taylor and then-South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Last year, Day joined the 110th Information Operations Battalion for a yearlong assignment involving a 12-country region in the Horn of Africa.

President Joe Biden has reportedly settled on former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel or Nicholas Burns, a top-ranking State Department official from the George W. Bush administration, to be his ambassador to China.
Bloomberg reported Wednesday that the president wants someone with “deep, diplomatic ties” to fill the position. Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s have committed to carrying on certain aspects of the Trump administration’s tough stance on China, including pressing Chinese President Xi Jinping over the genocide of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang by the Chinese government.

The 38-year-old will become the first out LGBT+ person to hold a full-time cabinet post, though controversial gay Trump official Richard Grenell temporarily filled the cabinet role of acting director of national intelligence for three months while a successor was confirmed.
Slate staffer voted for President Trump, even though more than 74,200,000 other Americans did a record haul for a Republican nominee. That compares with 56 staffers who said they voted for Joe Biden (98%), one who picked Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins (2%), and one intern who as of November 2 still hadn’t made up her mind between Hawkins and Biden.
