The Order of the Sons of Italy Lodge #1309 is offering a $500 Scholarship available to a Salida High School Senior.

Students applying are asked to complete a personal statement, giving a brief history of their Italian heritage, why they are proud to be Italian Americans and why they deserve the scholarship.
Students should include their name, address, email, and phone number, as well as their personal statement, GPA, and high school records, showing the classes they took while in high school.

We’d like to send along a couple of Sun-Gazette shout-outs today to two people whose names now appear on local buildings and for good reason.
Larry A. Ward graduated in 1966 from the former Williamsport Technical Institute, which later became the Williamsport Area Community College and is now Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Decades after his graduation, a newly revamped building on campus bears his name the Larry A. Ward Machining Technologies Center.
That followed his gift of $1 million to the college the largest alumni gift in the school’s history.
It was a bit of appreciation for the school that gave him all of the tools he needed for success as an engineer, manufacturing designer and business owner.

A founding member of the Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge 138 was honored Monday by members naming a restored headquarters in Newberry after him.
Eugene “Geno” Ciccareli, 97, for which Ufficiale Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge 138 at 1616 McMinn Ave. is named, smiled at the ribbon cutting, in which a ribbon decked in green, white and red, the colors of Italy, was used.
“It’s good to be here,” Ciccareli said in a soft voice behind his face mask.
In June, Ciccareli said he will celebrate his 98th birthday.
The lodge was originally founded on June 3, 1903. In the early years of Lodge 138 in Williamsport, Ciccarelli was described as a binder.
