El Cajon spent $1.5 million to provide services to homeless, clean up city

EL CAJON
El Cajon has the second-highest number of homeless people in San Diego County, so it’s not surprising that it is among the top concerns of residents and businesses.
Last week, El Cajon City Manager Graham Mitchell provided an update to the City Council about the steps the city has taken to help those living on the streets 784, according to the Point-in-Time Count coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless in January 2020 as well as keep the city safe and clean. The city of San Diego had the most, with 4,887 homeless people.
El Cajon funded or operated nine homeless-related programs in calendar year 2020, Mitchell said, providing $1.5 million. A report shared by staff said those funds include $1.2 million for homeless assistance/housing programs and nearly $278,000 on neighborhood cleanup efforts related to homeless issues. ....

Winter shelters a respite for homeless families

For the last week, Eddie Louise Horace and her grandkids have found shelter at a Del Mar church. Before that, they had been in motel rooms. And when the money ran out, they started living out of her car.
Horace and the little ones are among those who can count on a safe place and warm food, at least for the next few months, now that a few houses of faith have opened their doors to provide winter shelter.
“Sleeping in that car with two kids, one on the seat, one on the floor, you having to wake up to see who is around you really can’t sleep but you have to sleep,” Horace said. “Here, I feel safe. We are inside, it’s not cold, I’m able to rest. We are able to be together.” ....

Chula Vista online store now open
Chula Vista residents are proud of their city, and now they can show their pride with a variety of merchandise bearing the city’s logo. First came face masks branded with the city logo, followed by variations of the logo spotted on hats, T-shirts and tattoos. So the city opened an online store at www.chulavistaca.gov/store. The store is accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world to buy items such as T-shirts, face masks, baby onesies, stickers, skateboards and more with a blue or white version of the logo. Proceeds from all sales benefit Chula Vista public entities that support the community, including programs offered by the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation, and Friends of Chula Vista Parks and Recreation. Funding to these nonprofits provides free and reduced programming, materials and supplies, benefiting people and animals. ....
