Star s death will play a mean pinball with rhythmic planets

Astronomers spot a blinking giant near the centre of the Galaxy

Over 500 new FRBs detected in single year due to CHIME telescope

In the decade following their discovery in 2007, only 140 FRBs had been seen. Now, thanks to the launch of a large stationary telescope in the interior of British Columbia in 2018, the number of new FRBs detected has almost quadrupled for a total of 535. A McGill-led inter-university collaboration, has now put together the first CHIME/FRB catalogue.

Scientists discover new exoplanet with an atmosphere ripe for study

An international group of collaborators, including scientists from NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and The University of New Mexico, have discovered a new, temperate sub-Neptune sized exoplanet with a 24-day orbital period orbiting a nearby M dwarf star. The recent discovery offers exciting research opportunities thanks to the planet s substantial atmosphere, small star, and how fast the system is moving away from the Earth.

A study shows the unexpected effect of black holes beyond their own galaxies

E-Mail Credit: Gabriel Pérez Díaz, SMM (IAC) and Dylan Nelson (Illustris-TNG). At the heart of almost every sufficiently massive galaxy there is a black hole whose gravitational field, although very intense, affects only a small region around the centre of the galaxy. Even though these objects are thousands of millions of times smaller than their host galaxies our current view is that the Universe can be understood only if the evolution of galaxies is regulated by the activity of these black holes, because without them the observed properties of the galaxies cannot be explained. Theoretical predictions suggest that as these black holes grow they generate sufficient energy to heat up and drive out the gas within galaxies to great distances. Observing and describing the mechanism by which this energy interacts with galaxies and modifies their evolution is therefore a basic question in present day Astrophysics.
