RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The Brazilian Amazon lost 1,180 square kilometers of forest in May, the largest devastated area for that period since 2016, when the historical series began to be measured, according to deforestation alerts released this Friday.
According to monthly data captured by the Real-Time Legal Amazon Deforestation Detection System (Deter) and disclosed by the National Institute of Spatial Research (INPE), deforestation alerts increased by 41% in May compared to the same month in 2020.
The methodology used in Deter is based on satellite images and is used by INPE to provide early warnings about areas . . .

Yale and Columbia Create Interactive Vaccine Allocation Map
A team from Yale and Columbia have created an interactive map of each county in each state proposing how COVID-19 vaccinations could be distributed.
A new interactive map can provide an important tool for policymakers and the public to analyze differences between COVID-19 vaccine distribution strategies. The publicly available map, which displays each county of each state, highlights issues surrounding equity and vulnerability of at-risk groups.
“With over 250 million adults still needing vaccines across the country, who will be first in line to receive them?” said Amy Kapczynski ’03, Professor of Law at Yale Law School and faculty co-director of GHJP. “All people in the United States have been granted the right to have access to free, safe, and effective COVID-19 vaccines.
