Students across the country return to college on Monday, March 8. Hereford College of Arts, Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College and Hereford Sixth Form College have collaborated to highlight how to stay safe during the pandemic, while putting students’ education first as part of a Play Your Part scheme. Several measures have been introduced to keep students safe, such as compulsory face coverings, sanitising stations, one-way systems, social distancing and regular Covid-19 testing. Acting director of Public Health in Herefordshire Dr Rebecca Howell-Jones said: “It’s important to remember the virus is still out there in our communities. And while the vaccination programme is being rolled out across the country, every social contact is an opportunity for Covid-19 to spread.

A BRIGHT Leominster teenager has won a place at Cambridge University to study medicine after being inspired by the medics who looked after a sick relative during the coronavirus pandemic. Lily, who will be the first person in her family to go to university, became interested in medicine when volunteering with homeless charity Vennture in Hereford. The 17-year-old said she is now chomping at the bit to get started after the heroics of the NHS staff who looked after her great uncle after he was admitted to hospital with coronavirus. Lots of people think it is strange to want to be in the middle of something like a pandemic but I am just really chomping at the bit to get started, she said.

1. The Special Air Service (SAS) The Hereford-based SAS has become one of the most famous elite fighting forces in the world. Its hand-picked troops have to pass a legendarily tough selection process. The SAS regiment of the British Army was formed during Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. It was the idea of Lieutenant David Stirling, who envisaged small teams of soldiers operating behind enemy lines to gain intelligence and disrupt operations.
