The inaugural “Little Nell Culinary Fest” will take place on the very weekend that would normally see the Aspen Food & Wine Classic roll into town June 17-20. It’s a big void to fill. But if anybody has the chops to do it, it’s the culinary and wine teams at the Nell.
2017 Mi Sueño Syrah
In Spanish, “Mi Sueño” means “my dream” and this wine is the culmination of a lifelong dream for Napa Valley Vintner Rolando Herrera. In fact all of the Mi Sueño wines could be considered such. Herrera, who immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 15, has become one of Napa’s most storied winemakers. While perhaps best known for his Cabernet Sauvignon, he makes a small amount of Syrah because he likes the way the Rhône grape grows in the Napa Valley. Deep purple in the glass with bold but softened tannins, this wine is a combination of French grapes, Napa terroir and Mexican talent.

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down in so many ways. In tourist destinations heavily reliant on travelers from far-flung cities across the globe, the impact has been profound. The dialogue changed from over-crowding and sustainable tourism to safety and basic survival overnight. The darkest days of the spring 2020 quarantine saw us hiding in our homes, stockpiling toilet paper, running low on Clorox wipes, and hosting Zoom happy hours. An unprecedented mountain town real estate boom was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind.

Sing it with me: “On the road again / Goin’ places that I’ve never been / Seein’ things that I may never see again / And I can’t wait to get on the road again…”
The words of the legendary country crooner and cannabis activist Willie Nelson have been in the back of my mind while staying home for the past year, unsure of when I’d actually and safely be able to get on the road again. Now that a return to travel has commenced, I can’t wait to put my multiple itineraries made in Apple Notes during the pandemic to proper use.
