The MIAA Division 3 state softball championship game might as well be called the Turners Falls Invitational at this point.
For the seventh straight tournament, the Thunder find themselves playing for the championship, and this time around they’ll take to the road Wednesday evening with a matchup against Eastern Mass. champion Amesbury at 5 p.m. The game will be played at Amesbury Middle School.

The Turners Falls and Frontier softball teams have had plenty of time to stew over their championship game losses two years ago.
The Thunder blitzed through the Western Mass. Div. 3 tournament, crushed Hopedale in the state semis but fell to Austin Prep in the championship game. The seventh-seeded Redhawks made a run of their own in the Western Mass Div. 2 tourney, reaching the championship game before losing to Hampshire at UMass.

They don’t make many football players like Archbishop Williams High senior Tyler Cooley anymore.
The fullback/linebacker is the heart and soul of the Bishops, who just finished a 5-2 season with a 43-6 win over Cardinal Spellman last month. It was the team’s first win against its Thanksgiving foe since 2017.
“He’s an old-school player,” said Archbishop Williams coach Matt Reggiannini. “You could put him in any decade and he could play. He’s tough. You could really build a team around that, especially a defense.”
Cooley has the look to match his play. He’s got big shoulder pads that hang out of his jersey that’s tucked in at the sleeves and eye black covering more of his face than not. And in true ironman fashion, after the Spellman win, there was blood on his nose.
