MERLIN, Ore. – In Josephine Co., residents will vote on whether or not they want to allow a fire district in their community.
If approved, the Josephine Independent Rural Fire Protection District would be formed. Residents would pay an extra tax of $1.74 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The new fire district would also have 5 board members to govern it.
“This is like one of several different attempts that have brought us to this point. And I can say in the 33 years I’ve been doing this it’s been on the to-do list for quite some time,” said Austin Prince, Rural Metro Fire.

Highway 199 sees uptick in crashes, well ahead of 100 Deadliest Days
The first few months of 2021 have been particularly bad on Highway 199, a corridor infamous locally for the number of deadly wrecks.

CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. Every year, southern Oregon s Redwood Highway earns its reputation as a dangerous stretch of roadway for drivers. The first few months of 2021 demonstrate that a year of pandemic lockdown hasn t improved matters.
Between January 1 and March 29, there were 77 recorded crashes on just the Oregon side of Highway 199, according to Oregon State Police data. During the same period in 2020, there were only 44. In 2019, that number was 55.
