Abigail Macy Owens, age 18, of New Braunfels, Texas passed away on May 14, 2021 following a 15-year journey through cancer and other life-long health issues. Her life was an inspiration to many and an example of hope and resilience. Abby was born on December 28, 2002, with a rare brain disorder that resulted in many challenges and developmental delays that affected her daily life. At age 3, Abby was diagnosed with leukemia and battled through chemotherapy and treatment for five years followed by years of medications and therapies. She relapsed just before her 16th birthday and underwent a bone marrow transplant in May 2020. Abbyâs last year of life was difficult as she struggled to recover and regain her physical strength. ....

Inspired by Max Woosey, who slept in a tent for a year to raise money for North Devon Hospice, Ashley Owens, of Brookswood Lane, has been camping in his garden since March 27 to fundraise for ‘Helen McGarry Rehoming Cyprus Dogs’. Ashley’s family found out about the charity through a friend his mother had met on Facebook, and he wanted to raise money as they do not get any public funding. ....
Human trafficking is everywhere, including in Blair County. It was the topic of a recent presentation at the Blair County Chamber of Commerce’s Committee on NonProfit Businesses, Best Practices Forum. Guest speaker Ashley Owens, Children’s Advocacy Center director at Family Services Inc., said it is hard to tell how big the problem is here. “We have heard from survivors that the Altoona area is a place there has been trafficking because we were not looking for it. Now we are working to spread education and trying to notice red flags to notice situations as trafficking. Blair County, since 2014, has had four arrests for human trafficking including the (Stephen) Apostolu case,” Owens said. “We have been able to identify children who are victims of human trafficking that didn’t reach the court system.
