MARKET SNAPSHOT: Sunset neighborhood has a magical ambience
Chris Angermann
Located in the northwest sector of the intersection of Proctor Road and Sawyer Road, the Sunset neighborhood seems nondescript. It’s easy to miss it driving past and give it no second thought because there is no signage on the access roads into the subdivision Jamaica Street, Sunniland Street, Watkins Avenue, and Sloan Avenue.
But if you venture inside Sunset, you’ll be in for a lovely surprise. The place has a magical ambiance all its own.
Mature, gnarled oak trees reach with their branches across the road, providing a cooling canopy for much of the neighborhood. Florida fauna abounds throughout, including palm trees, pines, schefflera, crotons, and ixora, and shrubbery so dense in places that it hides the homes from the street.
CUMBERLAND – Since going to an online streaming platform last year, the Cumberland School Committee has seen engagement with its meetings skyrocket, going from three or four in attendance before the pandemic to sometimes hundreds of participants. During one meeting last August, some 600 people were on the call for a meeting.
Chairwoman Karen Freedman said it’s clear that a virtual component should remain as “what’s best for the public,” with increased accessibility bringing “way more engagement than ever,” even as the committee now considers ways it might get back together in an in-person setting.
There are a lot of logistics to figure out for a return to in-person meetings, said Freedman, but school leaders are here to serve the public and do what’s best for them.
