ALTON The Alton Community Service League met May 10 at Camp Warren Levis for their first in-person meeting this year. Thanks to the hard work of Cathy Droste, chair of the Ways and Means Committee, and the members at large, the ACSL was able to fund the following grants to the community totaling $5, 508: Serving Area Kids, All God’s Children, Alton Youth Symphony, Girl Scouts of Southern Il.,Thrive Metro East, and Alton Juneteenth Committee.

Service League accepting grant requests Jan. 15, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail ALTON The Alton Community Service League, a nonprofit group focused on volunteerism, is accepting grant applications from not-for-profit organizations interested in applying for monetary grants. Forms are available by contacting Carol Morris at cmorris191@sbcglobal.net, 618-530-2276 or 618-462-4063, or mailing requests to Alton Community Service League, P.O. Box 211, Alton, IL 62002. Completed forms must be postmarked by March 15, 2021. Grant recipients will be announced in May. Alton Community Service League has raised funds for area beautification and non-profits for more than 63 years. Members volunteer at the Nan Elliott Rose Garden and help maintain the garden beds on Third Street in downtown Alton. However, because of the pandemic, members were unable to volunteer at a venue of their own choice.

A record number of people participated in this year’s cemetery tour. ALTON The 19th annual Vintage Voices held in the Alton Cemetery during October had a record attendance of 580 people. The Vintage Voices walking tours include stops at various grave sites as actors in period costumes tell stories of their role in history. It began in 2002 as a fundraiser for the Alton YWCA and, through the years, has been a collaboration between the YWCA, Alton Cemetery Board, Alton Little Theater and a committee comprised of community volunteers.
