FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – MSC Splendida, the second in MSC Cruises’ luxurious “Fantasia” class of cruise ships and the newest addition to the most modern fleet in the industry, was christened in Barcelona yesterday. Performing in his hometown, the maestro was accompanied by the 60 musicians of the Orquestra Simfonica del Valles. The celebration was complete with a traditional ribbon cutting by the godmother of the MSC Cruises fleet, Italian icon Sophia Loren, and a spectacular fireworks display culminated the christening ceremony.

DVIDS - News - Army-funded researcher receives award for mathematical theory

5 RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. A U.S. Army-funded researcher who developed a mathematical theory for complex systems such as networks, power grids and the human brain, received a prestigious scientific award. A new approach for solving dynamic problems will allow advancements, predictability and system protection in a wide range of fields, including network security, fluid dynamics, soft robotics and energy-efficient design, researchers said. Igor Mezić, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mathematics at University of California Santa Barbara, earned the J. D. Crawford Prize. The prize is awarded every two years by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Dynamical Systems. It recognizes contributions from a paper addressing fundamental issues in the dynamical-systems field.

Largo leaders say city needs to plan for future needs of electric vehicle owners

LARGO — The day when electric cars outnumber gasoline-powered ones is on the horizon, Largo officials say. Therefore, the city and developers should start laying the groundwork for residents now. That was the direction from the City Commission earlier this month when city staff presented proposed development standards for its new Tri-City Special Area Plan. The plan, which was adopted in December, aims to promote projects and strategies that encourage mixed-use development, and transportation and aesthetic improvements in the roughly 900 acres surrounding the U.S. 19 and East Bay Drive/Roosevelt Boulevard area. “The vision for the Largo Tri-City SAP is to create a place that is a destination and a complete community that includes a mix of uses,” according to the plan’s introduction.
