Green Hydrogen for Scotland project targets 40MW of solar and 50MW of battery storage

Green Hydrogen for Scotland project targets 40MW of solar and 50MW of battery storage Email The Whitelee wind farm will be used together with solar and storage to power the 20MW electrolyser. The company has submitted a planning application for up to 40MW of solar, made up over 62,000 individual solar cells, and up to 50MW of battery energy storage, which would be located on a site 5km west of Lochgoin Reservoir, just outside of Glasgow in Scotland, and adjacent to the existing Whitelee Extension substation.

FRV and Harmony begin construction of second battery storage project

Construction has got underway for Renewables developer Fotowatio Renewable Ventures’s (FRV) second battery storage project in the UK, together with partner Harmony Energy. FRV, owned by Saudi Arabian industry group Abdul Latif Jameel, has deployed hundreds of megawatts of wind and solar projects around the world since 2006, when it built what was then the world’s largest solar plant, a 23MWdc project in Spain. However, the company only began its involvement in battery storage in 2019 with the announcement of its first grid-scale battery project, the 7.5MW / 15MWh Holes Bay project in England.

Create market mechanism for long-duration energy storage, says UK renewables industry group

A new market mechanism for longer-duration storage should be created according to the UK’s Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA). In a new report, the trade association formerly known as the Renewable Energy Association looked into the need for longer-duration storage and the current challenges facing the technology, with a focus on storage with a duration of up to 24 hours. Technologies could include flow batteries, gravity batteries, pumped hydro, liquid air energy storage (LAES) and compressed air energy storage (CAES).

Maximising revenue through flexibility: colocation of wind and storage

Image: ScottishPower. There are numerous benefits from collocating battery energy storage with wind power, including grid availability and planning ease. Speaking at Solar Media’s Energy Storage Summit 2021, Tony Gannon, head of project management at ScottishPower Renewables explained how the company had chosen to take advantage of a number of these efficiencies for its 539MW Whitelee Wind Farm. Whitelee is a 50MW/50MWh storage project, which is collocating liquid cooled lithium-ion batteries with the UK’s largest onshore windfarm near Glasgow, Scotland. Plans for the battery were approved by the Scottish government in June 2019, and inverter maker Ingeteam was announced as the power electronics technology provider in July 2020, while the batteries used are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry cells from Chinese manufacturer CATL.
