Sailing Today Solo sailor rescued after eight hours in the water Nigel Fox with the PLB that alerted the emergency services that he was in trouble A solo sailor rescued eight hours after being pitched overboard in rough seas off Australia has spoken of his ordeal. The former Southampton sailor revealed that while he was floating in the sea he tried not to think of his beloved cat Stinky, who was left on the boat. Southampton-born expat Nigel Fox has been praised by rescue services for the quick actions which saved his life. He was located by an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) aircraft 23 kilometres from his boat after activating the PLB (personal locator beacon) attached to his lifejacket.
