The Virtual Thematic Sessions of the Latin America and the
Caribbean Climate Week 2021 (LACCW2021) are wrapping up
today, providing important momentum for a successful UN
Climate Change Conference COP26 in November in
Glasgow.
Momentum came from more than 5,000 registered
attendees joining in the conversation, including from the
host Government of the Dominican Republic, governments at
all levels, private sector leaders, academic experts and
engaged stakeholders.
The virtual sessions saw 83
events and close to 100 hours of live presentations and
discussions, with around 300 speakers, in collaboration with
more than 30 global and regional

UNITED NATIONS, May 13 2021 (IPS) - The Dominican Republic opened the 2021 virtual Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week with a pledge to increase the country’s climate ambition by reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 27 percent and maintaining progress towards climate neutrality according to the goals of the Paris Agreement.
“For us, climate action is not just about mitigation. We need to prepare for what is coming. We especially welcome this Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week. The packages of measures implemented by governments to drive the post-pandemic economic reactivation are an opportunity to reorient the development pattern towards one that is more sustainable and inclusive, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), affirmed today during the inauguration of Climate Week 2021.
