New Creative Space
Artlink is working with Park Central Mall and Gould Evans to transform nearly 20,000 square feet of basement space at the mall into a multidisciplinary space for Arizona artists. Community members can take virtual or online tours this month, and suggest best uses for the space by completing a survey. Organizers have not announced a timeline of next steps for the project.

Ballet Arizona will present the world premiere of Ib Andersen’s
The Four Seasons on an outdoor stage at Desert Botanical Garden, where 15 performances are scheduled between May 18 and June 5. Set to the music by Vivaldi, it marks the first large-scale public performance for the ballet company since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

APS worked with Espiritu Loci, a Scottsdale-based firm that does development and planning, on design for the site. Part of the process involved inviting input from community members. “We’ve incorporated all of the elements that people have asked us to incorporate,” founder and CEO Trevor Barger explained during Wednesday’s meeting. (They’ve been gathering community feedback since 2018.)
Plans call for a central concave wall on the southwest corner of Roosevelt and Seventh streets, with visual elements that incorporate the Roosevelt Row name. Barger described it as a “grand welcome corner for Roosevelt Row.”
The design includes shade structures, benches, a clock tower, a Roosevelt Row marquee, and movie poster boxes where the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation can post event information. A large-scale map of Roosevelt Row is also in the mix.

Lifetime Arts Award
Bobb Cooper, producing artistic director for Valley Youth Theatre, will receive the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award during the 40th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards ceremony happening on Friday, March 26. The new award, which may not be given every year, is designed to honor legacy achievements, contributions to the arts, and service to Arizona. Cooper will celebrate his 25th anniversary with Valley Youth Theatre on March 20. The awards are presented by the Office of the Governor and Arizona Citizens for the Arts.

Artlink Exhibit
This is year 33 for the Art Detour event meant to highlight the city’s creative side, which kicked off on February 20 and continues for 33 days. This year’s lineup includes the 21st Annual Artlink Juried Exhibit, a multimedia affair showcasing 85 of the 725 artworks submitted for consideration. It’s on view now, and through June 13, at the FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel, where you can pop in to explore the art offerings at whatever time suits your fancy. The free exhibit includes works by artists working with diverse mediums and styles, including Mia B. Adams, Diana Calderon, Angel Castro, Min Kyu Kim, Katharine Leigh Simpson, and John Tuomisto-Bell.
