She had ceased ring, but her colours were still flying.” Advertisement So ended the German battleship Bismarck’s only operational sortie, which had begun from the Polish coastal city of Gotenhafen (modern-day Gdynia) just over a week before. The dramatic story has been told and retold in books, documentaries, a feature film – and even a country and western song. But the truth remains, perhaps, the most compelling account of all. Bismarck was launched in February 1939. Weighing in at over 50,000 tons when fully loaded, she displaced more than any other European battleship in service; she was fast, well-protected and heavily armed. When Burkard von Müllenheim-Rechberg joined Bismarck in June 1940 as fourth gunnery officer and personal adjutant officer to the ship’s captain ....
Born on June 24, 1925, to John and Sarah Gordon, Ian grew up in Chorlton-cum-Hardy Manchester. He attended Chorlton Municipal Grammar School for Boys who were briefly evacuated as a whole school at the start of the war, before leaving at 16 to start work as a copy boy at the Daily Telegraph in Manchester. He then became a junior reporter for The Manchester City News, beginning a career in journalism spanning almost 50 years. He received his calling up papers as his 18th birthday approached, joining the Royal Navy in 1943; on discovering during his medical that he was colour blind and given his ‘good education’ he was signed up as a coder and sent off to Butlins Skegness, which had been commandeered for initial training and kitting up of new recruits. ....
The decision earlier this month by senior civil servants was made despite a direct recommendation from Gavin Williamson to create the award when he was defence secretary in 2019 and referred the matter to the committee. At the time, Mr Williamson said: “We must never forget their courage and bravery in contributing to keeping their country safe during the Cold War.” It comes against a history of the HD committee snubbing Britain’s brave veterans by resisting creating medals for those who were not formally recognised. This included the Arctic Convoy veterans in the Second World War which was only resolved when former Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the committee to create a medal in 2012. ....
