SPRINGFIELD As state education leaders set the stage on Friday for the reopening of schools in April, in phases under the coronavirus pandemic, city officials said they have gone “above and beyond” the call to make the buildings safe.
The measures include $1.2 million invested in ventilation improvements targeting all school buildings that has now been completed, along with other renovations and COVID-19 precautions, city officials said this week.

As the vaccine slowly drips through to municipalities across the state, city leaders look at where they could open their own sites for residents.
Springfield houses the only super vaccination site west of Worcester at the Eastfield Mall, which has seen problems with understaffing and overbooking for the Pfizer-BioNTech dose. On Feb. 1, people 75 years old and over were able to book a vaccine at sites across the state. With a limited number of appointments statewide, officials question how many city residents are getting vaccinated at the site.

SPRINGFIELD The city plans to expand public COVID-19 testing with sites at the Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy on State Street and an additional location in the Mason Square area.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Health Commissioner Helen R. Caulton-Harris outlined the plan this week during an update with the City Council.
