Dundee and Fife councils poised to leave roadside grass verges to go wild

Councils in Tayside and Fife are to leave roadside and park grass verges uncut as part of a “rewilding” drive – but some community groups still oppose the plans. Local authorities in Fife and Dundee have been accused of trying to cut costs under the guise of biodiversity and putting public health and road safety at risk. It comes after a study by Exeter University found councils letting roadside verges go wild could bring huge environmental benefits. Sites across Dundee and Fife are being considered for “naturalisation” after public consultation. In Dundee most city parks, as well as along the Esplanade in Broughty Ferry, are in the frame for greater wildlife zones.

Winterwatch uses cameras from Leonardo to capture beavers at work

VIEWERS of the BBC’s recent Winterwatch were captivated by night footage of beavers captured with technology made in Southampton. Aerospace engineer Leonardo, based at the city’s First Avenue, was responsible for the thermal imaging camera which caught the animals in their natural habitat in Cornwall. The series charted the habits and survival instincts of a wide range of animals in winter. Winterwatch presenter Gillian Burke told viewers of the “superpowers” of beavers, whose strong build allows them to create dams that protect the local area from flooding. Researchers at Exeter University found that during peak flooding flow, the beavers reduced water flow in their immediate vicinity by 60 per cent.
