Minnesota has struggled for many years with a lack of available child-care, also referred to as âchild-care deserts.â The COVID-19 pandemic has created an ever greater need as the Star Tribune recently reported Minnesota has lost approximately 4,000 licensed family child care providers. Christine Mutchler, Itasca Community Collegeâs Early Childhood Education instructor wanted to find a way to help after she heard the concerns from the community and saw recent research regarding this gap.Â
âThe one thing holding rural Minnesota back from taking a serious leap forward economically is the lack of workers, and there are three things getting in the way of fixing that: a lack of child care, a lack of affordable housing, and a lack of transportation,â according to Marnie Werner, Vice President of Research from the Center for Rural Policy and Development. âThe biggest of these is child care.âÂ
NJ students: SCVTHS students earn medals in championships

Throughout the month of April, Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) students competed against other career and technical education students from around the state, in both virtual and in-person events, as part of the 2021 New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships. Out of the 73 students from SCVTHS who competed, 54 received medals including 25 gold. The gold medal winners are now eligible to test their skills at the upcoming, virtually held, SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June. During the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), more than 6,000 career and technical education students will showcase their talents and compete in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations. The test competencies are set by industry.

FLEMINGTON, NJ – Hunterdon County Polytech Career and Technical High School is celebrating the results of the virtual Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference.
Polytech students won gold medals, the school’s chapter received The Red Rose Chapter Award and advisor Natalie Guarino received a Master Advisor Award for New Jersey.
