ROANOKE, Va. – Gun violence continues to weigh on the star city’s community, but a Roanoke boxing gym that operates on donations may help curb the concerning rise by shaping young lives.
In Southeast Roanoke, you can find a brawl at Champ’s Gym on Jamison Avenue that teaches resilience and camaraderie.

SEC Names Keo Chea As Director of Public Engagement And Aisha Johnson As Director Of Media Relations Date

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced the appointments of Keo Chea as Director of Public Engagement and Aisha Johnson as Director of Media Relations. Chea joins the SEC from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, effective today, and Johnson will join the SEC from the office of U.S. Senator Bob Casey, D-Pa., effective May 10. The SEC is committed to open and frequent communication with the public and members of the media, said SEC Chair Gary Gensler. Keo and Aisha bring exceptional experience to the SEC, and are committed to transparently communicating the work of the agency so we can best execute our mission.
Marta Torres, 61, of Evanston died after she was critically wounded at an Evanston IHOP in the 100-block of Asbury Avenue last Saturday.
She is one of seven people shot and three others killed by 32-year-old Jason Nightengale, according to police. Among the other victims killed was 30-year-old University of Chicago Ph.D. student Yiran Fan, 46-year-old mother of two Aisha Johnson, and 20-year-old Anthony Faulkner who had just moved back to Chicago.
The three victims killed in a shooting rampage Saturday have been identified as family and friends reel from the senseless loss of their loved ones.
Yiran was the first of the seven victims and was found shot to death in a Hyde Park parking garage. Friends remember him as a brilliant student and a positive, loving person.
