At Sweet Basil in Needham and Waltham, owner Dave Becker chats with plenty of regulars, but he doesnât usually get hospital requests. The pandemic was different. One of his longtime guests â a chipper Ernest Hemingway doppelganger who looked straight out of âGulliverâs Travels,â he says â was critically ill with COVID-19. Heâd been on a ventilator. Heâd lost 50 pounds. He wanted to get well, of course. But he also wanted to get out and have some of Beckerâs short rib tacos.
Racial slurs among probation officers were dismissed as “banter” and ethnic minority staff were handed the cases of race hate criminals without being consulted, a watchdog said. One probation officer was even propositioned by a white male colleague because “he had not had sex with a black woman before”, a report on race equality in the service found. Chief Inspector of Probation Justin Russell said the findings were “disappointing” and said staff did not feel experiences of racism had been taken seriously. The inspection, carried out between October and December, looked at services in Bradford and Calderdale, Liverpool and Sefton, Hackney and Tower Hamlets in east London, Bedfordshire and Birmingham, considering 150 cases while also speaking to more than 100 probation staff and 80 offenders.

Inspectors said they heard distressing stories of inappropriate behaviour towards ethnic minority staff including instances of stereotyping, racist and sexualised language, and false allegations .
Gardiner city councilor behind on property taxes, asked to resign

GARDINER After learning that a newly elected city councilor has failed to pay real estate and sewer taxes since 2014 and 2013, members of the Gardiner City Council on Wednesday called on her to resign.
Penny Sergent was elected in November to an at-large seat on City Council that opened up when Jon Ault declined to seek another term.
At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Patricia Hart said she was concerned when Sergent’s name appeared on the list of properties the city has foreclosed on for unpaid taxes.
