Dominic Hamel played baseball at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, lettering twice. The right-hander had a solid build for a pitcher and a promising fastball and breaking ball but went undrafted as a senior. He attended Yavapai College, a community college in Prescott, Arizona after graduating high school, posting a 2.67 ERA in 67.1 innings in his freshman year and a 3.68 ERA in 73.1 innings in his sophomore year. His peripheral numbers in 2018 were excellent, with 29 walks and 79 strikeouts, but he regressed a bit in 2019, walking 44 and striking out 84. His 2019 sophomore season would end up being his last at Yavapai, as he transferred to Dallas Baptist University for the 2020 season, his junior year.

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 12, 2021 – The New York Mets today made nine selections in rounds 2-10 to complete day two of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft.
In the second round, with the 46th overall pick, the Mets selected Calvin Ziegler, a right-handed pitcher from TNXL Academy (FL). Ziegler, 18, hails from Ontario, Canada, but spent the 2021 season pitching stateside. He is the top Canadian prospect in this year’s draft class according to
MLB Pipeline and has a fastball with velocity that has reached as high as 97 mph.
With their third-round pick, New York took Dominic Hamel, a right-handed pitcher from Dallas Baptist University (TX). Hamel, 22, was 13-2 with a 4.22 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) this season. The six-foot, two-inch Chandler, Arizona native ranked in the top 10 in the nation in strikeouts, whiffing 136 batters in 91.2 innings, good for a 13.35 K/9 rate.

After the Mets got a steal in Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker at No. 10 overall, who signed a $6 million signing bonus, they loaded up on more arms in rounds 2-10 on Monday.
Starting with right-hander Calvin Ziegler in the second round, the Amazins proceeded to draft six more pitchers, which put their total at eight hurlers in the first two days.

Despite being projected to go in the top eight, Rocker fell to the Mets at No. 10 due to his high money demands and a slight dip in velocity this season. Regardless, Rocker has ace-like potential, and was one of the biggest names in all of college baseball this year.
