Families to Benefit from Seashore Park Upgrade
The Ministry of Blue Economy, Belize City Council and the Caribbean Shores area representative have joined forces to improve the Seashore Park in Buttonwood Bay. News Five’s Duane Moody reports on the plans to retrofit the area with features reflecting the ministry.
Kareem Musa, Area Representative, Caribbean Shores
“On this side of the park we are going to have the blue economy features and then on this side the civil aviation features. So we are going to have concrete dolphins, fish so that the kids can play on. We are going to have an actual tower, a civil aviation tower and we are going to have some small little planes; installation of some airplanes and helicopters and that sort of thing. And then on the top of this roof, which to me is the greatest feature is an actual painting of the blue hole.”

Tracy Panton
About two weeks ago we showed you a group of angry fisherfolk who want G.O.B. to repeal Statutory Instrument fifty-seven of 2021 which was gazetted back in May. According to the fishermen, they were only recently made aware that the Minister of Blue Economy Andre Perez signed the new S.I. which amended the Fisheries Regulations to reverse the ban on permanent residents to obtain commercial fishing licenses. With the adjustments to the Act, the permanent residency card is now accepted as form of I.D. for the application process. Going forward, the regulations state that license will not be granted to an applicant unless the applicant is a Belizean by birth or naturalization or a permanent resident. During Friday’s House Meeting, Area Representative for the Albert Division Tracy Panton made an appeal on behalf of the local fisherfolk to which Minister Perez responded.

New Regulations to Protect Sharks in Belizean Waters
Here’s a public notice to fisher folks across the country, sharks fishing is now banned within radius of two nautical miles around Lighthouse Reef, Glover’s Reef and Turneffe Atoll. This follows new regulations approved the Government of Belize to establish a safe haven for sharks across an area of approximately one thousand, five hundreds square miles. The National Shark Working Group, a team comprised of government, shark fisher folk, N.G.O.s and researchers provided recommendations to the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation. The initiative combines the fisher’s knowledge with the experience of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sharks and Rays Conservation Program.
