Share A team from the University of Pennsylvania is a winner of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ninth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a national competition that engages college students in the design of green infrastructure solutions to address stormwater pollution. The Penn team won first place in the demonstration project category, which focuses on how green infrastructure can address stormwater pollution at a specific site on campus or local elementary, junior high, or high schools. Their project, “Growing Together,” is led by Corey Wills, who is enrolled in the Master of Environmental Studies and Master of City Planning programs, and includes a range of partners. ....

The first day at school for these students will come just short of one year since the last time Philadelphia public school students were in classrooms at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. These schools being deemed safe to reopen follows weeks of mediation between the school district and the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. Previous attempts to get children in pre-K through second graders back for hybrid learning resulted in a standoff between the district and teachers union about COVID-19 safety concerns and protocol, much of which focused on the district s plan to install window fans to improve ventilation in classrooms. ....
